60% of Teachers Are Using AI, According to Forbes

Imagine a classroom where every student receives personalised attention, tailored learning experiences, and immediate feedback.

Yet, many schools still grapple with one-size-fits-all teaching methods and overburdened educators.

This traditional model often leaves students disengaged and teachers overwhelmed. With limited resources, how can we ensure each student receives the support they need to thrive?

The answer lies in harnessing the power of AI to revolutionise education.

AI is poised to transform education by offering personalised learning experiences and alleviating teachers’ workloads. The recent partnership between Microsoft and Khan Academy exemplifies how AI can reshape our educational landscape.

Microsoft and Khan Academy: A New Era of Learning

Microsoft has teamed up with Khan Academy to make AI-powered tutoring accessible to K-12 educators across the United States.

This partnership centres on Khan Academy’s Khanmigo AI agent, which offers personalised guidance in subjects like maths, science, coding, and writing. By migrating Khanmigo to Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI Service, this tool will now be available for free to all U.S. K-12 educators.

Sal Khan, founder of Khan Academy, highlights the potential of AI to “accelerate student learning” and “make teaching more sustainable,” addressing the current challenges of low pay and unmanageable workloads that drive many teachers away from the profession.

The shift to Azure not only reduces costs but also enhances the capabilities of Khanmigo, enabling teachers to better plan their lessons and provide personalised student support.

Enhancing Math Education with AI

In addition to offering Khanmigo for free, Microsoft is leveraging its Phi-3 model to enhance maths tutoring.

This model, designed specifically for educational purposes, will utilise Khan Academy’s rich database of educational content to provide more effective and reliable maths tutoring. Phi-3’s focus on maths ensures it avoids the pitfalls of misinformation, providing precise and valuable assistance to students.

Deidre Quarnstrom, Microsoft’s education product vice president, emphasised the potential of this collaboration to improve “accessibility, reliability, and experience for AI-powered math tutoring.”

By incorporating AI into maths education, students receive tailored help that can significantly improve their understanding and performance in this critical subject.

Broadening Educational Horizons

The collaboration between Microsoft and Khan Academy extends beyond individual tutoring.

More Khan Academy courses will be integrated into Microsoft Copilot and Teams for Education, making high-quality educational content more accessible and interactive for students.

The “Share to Teams” feature will simplify the process of incorporating Khan Academy materials into classroom assignments, fostering a more collaborative and engaging learning environment.

The Current State and Future of AI in Education

AI is already making significant inroads in education.

A survey by Forbes Advisor found that 60% of educators are using AI in their teaching practices.

Younger educators, in particular, are embracing these technologies at higher rates. AI applications range from adaptive learning platforms and automated grading systems to intelligent tutoring systems and chatbots. All aimed at personalising learning experiences and reducing administrative burdens.

However, the adoption of AI in education is not without challenges.

Concerns about data privacy, access disparities, and the potential for cheating and misinformation need to be addressed.

The U.S. Department of Education and UNESCO advocate for a human-centred approach to AI, emphasising transparency, equity, and the enhancement of traditional teaching roles rather than their replacement.

Despite these challenges, the future outlook for AI in education is positive. Most teachers surveyed hold an optimistic view, believing that AI can significantly enhance the learning experience.

A study by Quizlet reveals that 62% of students and teachers are using AI technologies, with many reporting improvements in understanding and study efficiency.

Embracing Opportunities

The partnership between Microsoft and Khan Academy showcases the transformative potential of AI in education.

By providing personalised, AI-driven tutoring and integrating high-quality educational content into widely-used platforms, this collaboration is paving the way for a more engaging, efficient, and equitable educational system.

As AI continues to evolve, its role in education will undoubtedly expand. It will offer new opportunities to enhance learning outcomes and support educators in their vital work.
